“We feel free when we escape – even if it be but from the frying pan to the fire.” – Eric Offer
Well, not precisely to the fire, but a new routine that will feel arduous over time. It feels good to be OUT of the hospital and back at our Goodness Village Home Away from Home Apartment. I asked them to have their housekeeping peeps come and clean it while Dave was in the hospital, and they did a fabulous job.
I missed Dr. van Rhee because I got a fantastic call, and I left the room. Anyway, as I was heading back to the room, I saw him down the hallway. He stopped and said, “Dave is going home today!” I did a happy dance and popped back into the room, and started packing it all up! The Social Worker stopped by to inform me they had contacted Baptist Health to resume our PT and then asked if we would like all his new medications delivered to his room from their pharmacy before we left. Seriously? YES! What an excellent small convenience. They called, and Dave gave them his credit card for the co-pay over the phone. And we had all his meds in 30 min, and then we were free to leave. I will miss everyone there and left my blog website address on “the board” for them to see how we are doing—surrounded by a big heart and a thank you! Lots of good wishes and a few hugs. It was a stellar experience all around. However, Dave is super happy to be back and “untethered” by poles and monitors! I’m looking forward, as I imagine he is, to sleeping in a real bed! A very comfy bed! We ate my homemade spaghetti when we got home.
So the great call!!! My Aunt June (my Dad’s sister), 90, was married to Dick Huston. My Uncle Dick had three siblings, two brothers and a sister. Every other Thanksgiving, one of them would host it. So on the year that my Aunt June and Uncle Dick hosted, we would all go. Usually, we would have it with my grandparent’s who lived a quarter mile down the dirt road from June and Dick. It was always such a blast for me. All the Huston cousins and us would run around outside. They weren’t my cousins, but it felt like they were. Anyway, she saw on Facebook that we were in Little Rock and, you know, doing all this stuff. And she sent me a message to come to her place in Memphis for Thanksgiving! I sent her my phone number, and she called me quickly. We had the best call! I haven’t seen her since I was a young adult. Her husband, my Uncle’s brother, passed away several years ago after a ten-year battle with Alzheimer’s. If Dave is feeling well enough, we’ll head to Memphis. A reunion of sorts, and the opportunity to share beautiful memories of my grandparents. It’s 135 miles north of us.
Tomorrow we have a long day! Dave has an X-ray and an Ortho follow-up on his femur break, and then we’ll head to the Infusion clinic for 1-4 hours! Eeek!
