“Accept the challenges so that you may feel the exhilaration of victory.” – General George S. Patton
A big win for Dave yesterday! He played 18 holes of golf!
I have to admit, I have not been very supportive of his past inklings to accept a golf outing invitation. Except for his Yoga Summer, he has done little to get his body back, strengthened, stretched. He typically in the past has had muscle spasms up and down his back when he exerts himself in the slightest way. While that hasn’t been typical of late, and he does mow the lawn and do things, I would give him “the look”, you know the one a wife give’s her husband when he should really re-think what he’s thinking, when he mentioned an invitation. I haven’t squashed it or been grossly overbearing, but I have definitely not supported the idea. More out of genuine concern, “ARE YOU CRAZY?” running through my mind and surely appearing on my expression.
So yet another invitation came and I was less resistant, but still not exactly jumping for joy. I just said, “Do you think you can manage it? Please be careful out there ok? Have great time.”
He came in late last night with clubs over his shoulder sporting a big ‘ol shit eatin’ grin, as they say, looking at me all wide-eyed. I smiled broadly, and he said, “I DID IT! I PLAYED 18 HOLES OF GOLF!” Then he followed it, still smiling, “Well, I didn’t exactly crush the ball, you know, but I MADE IT! I DID IT!” I said, “Well how are you feeling?” He responded, “Well I’m a little tired and sore, but I’m good.” I said, “OK. Well get yourself some CalMac and I’m so happy for you Dave.”
His photo is pre-myeloma. I don’t have a lot of current photos. He’s puffier and doesn’t look nearly as fit as he does here, but most people who expect an emaciated cancer patient are always telling me how GREAT he looks, better than they expected. Sweet.
Anyhow, a great day for him (and me) and I’m just so happy for him. Its these milestones that we make and recognizing them as such, that make us feel inspired to keep going and enjoying each and every moment, big or small that come our way.
Awesome news. So happy for Dave and you. Each milestone is worth celebrating as you have done.

Great stuff going on over there – well done Dave!
Thanks you guys! He hasn’t played since 2008, so it has taken a while. The fact that he even wants to try is a big deal. I’m going to be very hopeful for both your guys, that they will be able to enjoy some of their old pleasures and sooner rather than later!
Lori: How wonderful! This gives my honey some hope. He’s been told that he probably won’t be able to play again (and this is a man that would play 54 holes, in a day).
I’m sure it was hard to “let” him go, sorta’ like letting your child go somewhere alone, for the first time!

How wonderful!!!!! GO Dave GO! I am hoping that I too will be able to post this about Mike…but for now….he’s happy to ride in the cart and watch his boys play. 🙂
