CB #29
Marilyn, our wonderful friend and doctor, who I have mentioned before, sent us a “healing blanket” shortly after Dave’s diagnosis.
This blanket was one made by all the members of her family; her sisters and their children, for her mother when she was ill and dying. It is a quilt of squares that they made depicting memories they all had of her mother. Originally they had made it for her to curl up with in her final days and make her smile.
“Touching” seems so inadequate to describe how meaningful and special it was that she boxed it up and mailed it 3,000 miles across the country to Dave. Trusting us with something so important. She said, “Keep it as long as you like or need.” We were both very moved.
We trekked it to Little Rock with us and back again, multiple times. He would often curl up in his chair with it wrapped around him and request it by name when he was wanting something warm.
Recently I boxed it back up with a note from Dave and I, thanking her for allowing us to have something so precious during his treatment. Just one more step in the process of moving forward. It felt good to return it, but also sad to see it go. Seeing all the love and heart that went into it, and that we were so incredibly privileged and blessed to have had on our journey. I’m sorry I don’t have a photo of it to share, a bit of an oversight on my part. But you get the idea.
Thank you Paula! We made a quilt with relatives from all over the country for my Grandparent’s 50th Wedding Anniversary celebration. It was a wonderful labor of love and so much fun. I only had to do a square. Whenever I would go to visit them, I would want to pull it out and look at it all again, who did what. 🙂
Thanks for commenting, I’ve been wondering who everyone is that seems to be visiting. 🙂
I think you could have got away with the lack of a photo if you’d not mentioned it – but now I’m sure there’s not only me salivating to see it! Such a tease.
I came across a similar thing recently in Share a Square 2010 (crocheting) and a lady telling me how a group sent her husband a handknit blanket and how much that meant to him. Being crafty myself I think it’s such a lovely idea – and lasts longer than flowers and doesn’t add weight like chocolate! ;D
Warm wishes to you both.
(I’ve been reading for a bit but never commented before.)
