“Luck: Where preparation and opportunity meet.” – Hudson’s Mom – (and countless others of like mind)
My son Hudson, a recent graduate at the University of Maryland, had applied for and won a Professional Internship at Disney’s Epcot Center in Orlando for the summer. We didn’t know at the time, but he had beat out somewhere in the neighborhood of 6,000 other applicants for this position. It has garnered him a lot of attention from UMD as well as potential employers. We later learned, that Disney has what is considered the highest horticulture standards in the industry, so if Disney picked up “this kid” we need to take a look at him. Not too mention the training he will gain having spent the summer working there.
Well indeed, he has two job offers and he will make a decision on which one after he flies to visit a location this Saturday.
Today, he received his certificate and small Mickey Mouse trophy, thanking him and acknowledging him for his internship this summer. They had three other BIG awards. One, for the best Journal, one for the best Design, and one called the Dreamer Award. Hudson won the Dreamer Award! (The large Mickey!)
It turns out that the interns had to present many things over the summer and one was a “project” or idea they had. Hudson’s was one called “What’s That Plant?” He created a brochure to help a patron of the park find out what a particular plant is. Apparently, the horticulture department ends their day by 1 pm on the park grounds so as not to interact with the patrons. But what happens when someone wants to know what a particular plant is and there is no one around who knows? So he created a brochure that gives them a small wax paper envelope to take a cutting of the plant, circle the location on the park, answer a few other questions about the plant and send it all off to them and they will respond via email to their question. In so doing, they now begin to have an email database to advertise their annual International Flower & Garden Festival.
Needless to say, he was pretty excited when he called me today, as he overheard that they want to use his idea to expand the experience for patrons at Disney as well as the Flower Festival attendance. Of course as his mother, I’m so proud of him. When dealing with his father’s Myeloma, I often felt I had abandoned both children to fend for themselves. I knew they could, and I knew they would, but I wasn’t ready to let go just yet, and I was forced too. So while I had complete confidence in them to continue forward with their studies and stay focused, and they did, I am just feeling how much sweeter it all seems to me at this point than it might otherwise have been.
CONGRATULATIONS HUDSON!

As a lifelong artist, I couldn’t be more proud that he got the DREAMER Award. It is personally very special to me that he received this one. I LOVE YOU HUDBUD!
