What a GREAT DAY! We enjoyed our first sailing excursion on a 42′ Beneteau vessel from the Modern Day Sailing Club, in Sausalito, California. A fabulous day with friends. Out to San Francisco Bay to Golden Gate, Pier 39, Ghiradelli Square, Alcatraz Island, stop for lunch in a cove in Raccoon Straits at Angel Island. We saw seals, dolphins and tons of beautiful birds.
Our skipper, Dena, decided she wanted to learn to sail. She took classes from Modern Day and is licensed up to 42′. Since we are 2 hours or so from the bay and she didn’t want the hassle of “owning” a boat. She is a member of this club for a very nominal fee each year which allows her to “charter” any of the 47 vessels she is licensed to sail. So she invites people to go sailing and everyone chips in for the cost of the day. We had three crew. Stacey, who grew up racing in S. California as a kid with her parents. Dena’s son, Kent and husband Steve. On the way back I sat in what I would call a jump seat in the back corner of the boat, slightly elevated from the deck. We caught a great wind and I was sitting inches off the water. Knowing the boat wouldn’t capsize I just went with it and it was AMAZING. I just hunkered down, very relaxed, leaning into the water with the boat. It was quite exhilarating. Dena is a terrific, calm skipper with a great command of what she is doing and why she does it. Pulling us all along with her incredible joy at being on the water. Most of the time she can be seen to have a big grin plastered on her face while at the helm. She said she still can’t believe she is sailing!
hi lori, what a lovely post about a perfect day at sea. i could “hear” the joy in your “voice” at the wonder of all you got to see and experience. such exhilaration is a marvelous thing, and i am so glad you provided all those beautiful photos. very enjoyable post -thank you!
I sure wish you weren’t so land-locked so you could join us! Seasick is no fun, like car sick which I used to get driving in the mountains to Tahoe when I was a little kid. So I relate – totally.
OMG. Looks like you guys were really enjoing yourselves. Must have been a great day for sailing; there were SO many sail boats and other boats out in the bay. I can almost feel the up and down motion from the waves. Oh my. Missing you all and see you soon.
